Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 49, published 6th December 2021. This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region.
Flats: Vietnamese buyers are shunning import offers of re- rolling hot rolled coil. They are staying away because of weak demand for coated steel as well as fears that a new Covid-19 surge will delay economic recovery.
Longs: East Asian import markets for rebar are falling on the approach of the winter season in China and Covid- related uncertainties. Wire rod exporters however have been hiking their offers.
Semis: The billet import market in Southeast Asia was quiet during the past week. Market mood is muted because regional rebar demand continues to be sluggish amid uncertainties posed by the new Covid-19 variant.
Raw Materials: Taiwanese scrap market offers have increased slightly after US suppliers returned to trading following the Thanksgiving holiday. Kallanish assessed HMS 1&2 80:20 container scrap at $455/t cfr Taiwan, up by $3/t week-on-week. US suppliers returned last week, with increased supply volume and higher prices.
