South East Asia Steel Markets Report - Week 36 (Sept. 8, 2021)

Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 36, published 8st September 2021. This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region. Additionally, the production section includes brand new data series monitoring hot metal production activity in the region at the blast furnace level.

  • Production: Southeast Asian blast furnace output has continued to move lower in response to weak demand from the Covid pandemic and the approaching monsoon season.
  • Flats: The Vietnamese import market for hot rolled coil continues to be stagnant. A four-day-long holiday weekend has contributed to its stillness.
  • Longs: The market for imported wire rod and rebar continues to move sideways in Southeast Asia. Prices are generally steady and any recent buying is for restocking purposes.
  • Semis: Billet import prices are once again rising in East Asia amid China’s return to the marketplace.
  • Raw Materials: The local scrap market in Taiwan has remained quiet, with weak steel sales leading to a deterioration in sentiment.
