South East Asia Steel Markets Report - Week 32 (Aug. 11, 2021)

Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 32, published 11th August 2021. This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region. Additionally, the production section includes brand new data series monitoring hot metal production activity in the region at the blast furnace level.

  • Production: The split in trends in Southeast Asian blast furnace activity continued last week.
  • Flats: The Vietnamese import market for hot rolled coil has weakened. Certain suppliers have reduced offer prices as demand continues to languish on Covid-19 curbs and uncertainties.
  • Longs: The ASEAN import markets for long products are quiet. The main regional countries are seeing steel demand plummet amid lockdowns to quell escalating Covid-19 cases.
  • Semis: ASEAN importers’ appetite for billet has shrunk significantly amid surging Covid-19 cases in the region. Domestic rebar prices are too weak to support billet import prices.
  • Raw Materials: Taiwan's scrap market has been sluggish in recent weeks, and weaker expectations in the market have also put pressure on prices.
