South East Asia Steel Markets Report - Week 24 (June 16, 2021)

Read the Kallanish South East Asia Report - Week 25, published 16th June 2021.  This is a weekly subscription report analysing production, flats, longs, semis, and raw materials for the region.  Additionally, the production section includes brand new data series monitoring hot metal production activity in the region at the blast furnace level.

  • Production: Blast furnace activity at Dung Quat continues to fluctuate, while other Southeast Asian plants saw fairly steady production last week, according to Kallanish’s satellite-based readings in collaboration with Tathya Earth.
  • Flats: The Vietnamese import market for hot rolled coil was quiet during the week. Domestic producer Formosa Ha Tinh announced on 11 June that it would maintain its price for allocations for August shipments.
  • Longs: Rebar markets remain sluggish in Southeast Asia, with prices correcting lower from late-May peaks. The slowdown in China and restricted construction activity in the region are dampening demand.
  • Semis: A recent Chinese booking of ASEAN billet points to a recovery in the regional billet market. ASEAN buyers have been passively waiting for market clarity after the Chinese billet market ebbed to lows at end-May.
  • Raw Materials: South Korea’s Hyundai Steel recently ordered a US West Coast scrap bulk cargo for August arrival.
