White House to enter UAW-GM labour spat
The White House plans to step in as mediator between the United Auto Workers and GM to hopefully end the union’s on-going strike, Kallanish understands from published political observer reports.
President Donald Trump hinted at a more active role for the White House almost immediately after the strike was declared.
“Federal mediation is always possible, if that’s what they want,” he says. “Hopefully, they’ll be able to work out the GM strike quickly. We don’t want General Motors building plants outside of this country, and we’re very strong on that.”
President Trump adds that he stands to benefit, politically, from a quick end to the strike.
“The UAW has been very good to me,” he says. “The members have been very good, from the standpoint of voting. The relationship is good. Hopefully, they’re going to work that out quickly and solidly.”
