US plate prices tread water
US plate pricing was unchanged last week, a situation that doesn’t look likely to resolve soon, buyers tell Kallanish.
There is still a $40/short ton price increase outstanding on plate products from Nucor and SSAB for January shipments.
That increase has yet to gain traction in the market, says one Midwest buyer. A36 product has maintained a $940-960/st price level for several weeks, even as both hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet prices retracted.
“Plate remains very stable,” he says. “I don’t see prices going down, and they may trickle upward in January.”
Little is expected to organically change in the plate market over the next several weeks, he adds, though new tariff or trade case news could potentially shock the market upward.
