Engineering steel weakness hits S+B 2019 results
The weak performance by the Schmolz+Bickenbach group in 2019, with a net loss of more than €500 million ($560m), was caused primarily by engineering steels, while tool and stainless steels did relatively better. The trend became more obvious towards the end of the year.
The sales volume for engineering steels in the full year fell by -15% to 1.352 million tonnes. Stainless steels' sales dropped by -2% to 337,000t, and tool steels by -10% to 137,000t.
