Mexico refuses US proposal for steel quotas
The Mexican government will not accept a system of reciprocal quotas as a solution to resolve its trade dispute with the US over the 232 measures. So said Mexico's deputy economy minister Luz Maria de la Mora Sánchez. during her participation at the 102th General Assembly of the American chamber of commerce of Mexico (AmCham) on 25 March monitored by Kallanish.
"The quota system does not correspond to the productive integration relationship like the one we have in North America. We are in dialogue with the US to revoke tariffs to Mexico and not to replace them with quotas. The consultations are still ongoing,” De la Mora Sánchez said.
Mexico must be excluded from the existing US 232 measures before ratifying the US-Mexico-Canada regional free trade agreement (USMCA), she added. The deputy minister did not, however, comment as to whether the Mexican government anticipates applying reciprocal measures in response to the US restrictions, as local steel sector has urged.
This week representatives of steelmakers in the US asked the local authorities not to cancel or change the 232 measures as these are working to support the recovery of the industry, they suggest (see related article).
