Mexico’s automotive sector saw production rebound in July after the sharp impact of the Covid-19 outbreak. Output rose both on-month and year-on-year in July but was still lower in the first seven months of 2020, Kallanish notes.

According to the Asociación Mexicana de la Indústria Automotriz (Amia), the sector produced 294,946 vehicles in July, up by 0.6% year-on-year.

Eight of the 11 manufacturers monitored by Amia improved their on-year performance. General Motors had the largest monthly output of 82,156 units, 6.2% more y-o-y. Meanwhile, second-largest Nissan produced 43,010 vehicles, up 12.1% over July 2019.

Output during the first seven months of 2020 was down -35.4% on-year at 1,467,644 units, or 806,878 vehicles less than in January-July 2019.

July vehicle exports fell by -5.4% y-o-y at 256,098 units. Shipments abroad, nevertheless, rose by almost 30.5% on-month compared to 196,173 units in June. Year-to-date exports decreased by -36.8% to 1,274,517 units.

Seven-month shipments to the US market fell by -34.4% to 1,041,719 vehicles, but still represented an 81.7% share of total Mexican exports, Amia confirms.

Sales to the domestic market remained low. These were -31.2% down on-year in July to 72,897 units and -31.8% less y-o-y cumulatively at 509,318 units.
