Explosion hits Posco blast furnace
An explosion occurred at Posco’s Gwangyang steelworks at around 4.05pm local time on 24 November. Three workers were killed and the company has not confirmed how much production will be affected, Kallanish notes.
According to local media reports, the local fire department has said that the fire was caused by a leak of oxygen from a cracked pipe at blast furnace No. 1. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes.
The No. 1 blast furnace at Gwangyang is the world’s largest, with an inner volume of 6,000 cubic metres.
Posco was forced to reduce output at Gwangyang due to a fire at a substation in July 2019.
