Brazilian ferrous scrap exports grew year-on-year in September. Shipments also rose month-on-month, according to Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (Mdic) data monitored by Kallanish.

Exports of scrap reached 72,370 tonnes in September, up by 138.4% y-o-y. These were also 16.4% higher than the volume of 62,160t shipped in August. Over the first nine months of 2019 shipments of ferrous scrap totalled 475,866t, an increase of 77.6% y-o-y.

In September alone, exports of scrap had an fob value of $20.9 million, or -4.9 lower compared to the same month of last year. Nine-month shipments abroad, however, rose by 17.5% y-o-y to $147.6m. The average value of Brazilian ferrous scrap exports was $311/tonne fob in the period, -33.9% down on the first nine months in 2018.

The main destination for Brazilian scrap exports in the first nine months of the year was Bangladesh, which took 32% of shipments. India and Indonesia were next with shares of 20% and 12%, respectively, Mdic data show.
