Aferpi restarts rail mill with Indian, British blooms
Aferpi, the Italian longs supplier formerly known as Lucchini, is restarting this week production of rails following the arrival of blooms from India and the UK, Kallanish understands from sources.
Aferpi has experienced trouble during the last months as the supply of semi-finished products has been uncertain. The company’s workers continue to demonstrate against the lack of industrial plan by Cevital, the Algerian group that acquired the Italian plant from administrators.
As reported, rumours said that Aferpi could well find an industrial partner to support the mill in the coming months. There is speculation in the market of interest from India’s JSW Steel, as well as UK-based Liberty House and British Steel.
Next week Aferpi’s management will meet with local authorities to shed some light on the promised investments in the mill. A negative outcome of the meeting could force the Italian government to actively look for another solution for the troubled steelworks located in Piombino.
