Toyota Motor North America will build a $1.29 billion automotive battery manufacturing plant in central North Carolina, Kallanish reports.

The plant, to be known as Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina, will initially have four production lines, each capable of delivering enough lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 vehicles. The company plans to expand to at least six production lines for a combined total of up to 1.2 million batteries/year for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

The facility, in Liberty, North Carolina, at the so-called Greensboro-Randolph Megasite, is expected to begin production in 2025 and will create about 1,750 new jobs. The announcement came on Monday.

“The future of mobility is electrification and the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite is the ideal location to make that future a reality,” says ceo Ted Ogawa in a statement. He cited North Carolina’s transportation links, the state’s workforce, renewable energy availability, the state’s education system and a strong partnership with state and local governments.

The company says the $1.29 billion investment will be made by Toyota and Toyota Tsusho. They had announced last October a total investment of about $3.4 billion. That investment in the North Carolina facility goes through 2031. Toyota will own 90% of the North Carolina project with Toyota Tsusho owning a 10% stake.
