TELLURIUM: Rio Tinto starts tellurium production in Utah
Rio Tinto is producing tellurium at its Kennecott copper operation in Utah, becoming only the second US producer of the critical mineral, Kallanish reports.
The company says it plans to produce about 20 tonnes/year of tellurium, which is used in advanced thin film photovoltaic solar panels from copper waste materials, in what is a new US domestic supply.
The tellurium will be refined by 5N Plus, a producer of speciality semiconductors and performance materials. I…
