GM, LG to build second $2.3 billion battery plant in Tennessee
General Motors and LG Energy Solution have confirmed they plan to build a second battery plant in the US at a cost of $2.3 billion.
GM-LG joint-venture Ultium Cells LLC will site the plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, on land leased from GM.
Construction is slated to start immediately with a prospective late 2023 start-up date, Kallanish understands from a GM statement.
“The addition of our second all-new Ultium battery cell plant in the US with our joint venture partner LG Energy Solution is another major step in our transition to an all-electric future,” says GM ceo Mary Barra. “The support of the state of Tennessee was an important factor in making this investment in Spring Hill possible and this type of support will be critical moving forward as we continue to take steps to transition our manufacturing footprint to support EV production.”
Ultium’s extant $2.3 billion facility in Lordstown, Ohio, is still under construction. That facility is scheduled to come online in 2022.
