China releases document on green aviation
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and three other government departments have released a document featuring development guidance for the green aviation manufacturing industry during 2023-2035, Kallanish learns.
In this document, the hot concepts of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and power batteries are mentioned.
According to this document, in 2025, the goal is to realise demonstrative application of sustainable fuel powered domestic civil aircraft, pilot operation of eVTOL aircraft, and feasibility verification of key technologies for hydrogen aircraft.
In 2035, the goal is to establish a complete, advanced, and safe green aviation manufacturing system and for new energy aircraft to become the mainstream.
In terms of power battery technology standards, the document stresses the importance of breakthroughs in high energy density lithium batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and high efficiency electric propulsion systems. It targets scaled production of 400 watt-hours/kilogram aviation lithium batteries, as well as small scale verification of 500 Wh/kg products.
The document also mentions that the government encourages demonstrative operation of in areas including Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Bohai Rim, Chengdu and Chongqing.
