California approves tiered flat-rate tax on Salton Sea lithium production
California lawmakers have approved a new flat-rate per ton tax on lithium used in EV batteries, despite warnings from the industry that such a tax could hurt lithium development in the state and slow lithium shipments to automakers, Kallanish reports.
The three-tiered tax, part of a new state budget, was signed into law last Thursday by Governor Gavin Newsom, after it had been approved the night before by the California legislature.
