Green Steel Forum 2024

This event is past.

Green steel is the future. It must be – the steel industry emits around 7% of global carbon dioxide emissions and we are agreed the planet is in trouble. But how do we get there? The plethora of obstacles in the way is vast.

The Kallanish Green Steel Forum will welcome stakeholders from across the steel industry supply chain who are proactively engaging in decarbonising the steel industry. As well as being an opportunity for productive networking, the event will aim to discuss the challenges around lowering emissions and how they can be overcome.

The favoured technology to decarbonise steelmaking has been chosen. Most producers are opting for direct reduction of iron ore pellet, followed by its use in an electric arc furnace, mixed with recycled steel, to produce crude steel. The iron ore reductant is to be hydrogen. But this poses challenges.

Producers, too, must invest considerable sums in new technology. The recent announcements in Germany and France show that state aid for the steel industry is now acceptable.

With zero-emission hydrogen production difficult in some regions, the idea is gaining traction in “green” ore-based metallics export hubs. Locations such as Australia and Brazil, which have strong renewables generation potential and captive iron ore, would ship product to Japan, South Korea, China and Europe for use in low-emission steelmaking.

Increased scrap use will also play a big role in decarbonisation, but technology and streamlining the scrap supply chain will be necessary to limit impurities in scrap.

Global steel decarbonisation is also characterised by different speeds between regions. With the EU further down the line than most, the bloc implemented last October its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in a trial phase.

India and Southeast Asia are meanwhile investing in new blast furnaces. What will become of these as the world heads unstoppably in the direction of increased environmental regulation?

We invite you to join us at the Kallanish Green Steel Forum – London event to hear from steel industry leaders on how the sector is transforming to meet net-zero targets and sharpen your understanding of the new world of opportunities and challenges that green steel presents. Book your place now!

  • Biggest zero-emission DRI-EAF bottleneck will be lack of renewable energy infrastructure
  • Europe will require vast investment and government support
  • Concerns over hydrogen availability not covering demand targets in the 2030s
  • Is state aid for steel acceptable now?
  • Green metallics export hub challenges
  • Technological innovation needed to remove scrap impurities
  • Mature economies as future scrap hubs
  • Increased resource nationalism amid scrap’s gaining importance
  • CBAM implementation – challenges for importers
  • Varying speeds of decarbonisation – what will become of Asian blast furnaces?

The Green Steel Challenge Podcast

The Green Steel Challenge podcast aims to invite a conversation, ignite innovation and accelerate change within and around the steel industry, contributing significantly to the decarbonisation of this crucial material.

Steel, a fundamental component in everything from buildings and washing machines to wind turbines and electric vehicles, is pivotal for our transition to a carbon-neutral, circular economy.

However, the steel industry is responsible for approximately 7% of global carbon emissions. Just over half of the major steel companies worldwide have committed to carbon emissions reduction targets to achieve net zero. Low-carbon or zero-carbon steel production, often called ‘Green Steel’, promises a solution.

But how exactly can we deliver Green Steel? Which companies, technologies, and visionary leaders are at the forefront of this change? And what steps can we take to expedite progress?

Drawing inspiration from Willy Korf, the German entrepreneur known as a steel rebel and pioneer of the mini-mill and DRI, this podcast challenges the steel industry. Produced by The Willy Korf Foundation and Kallanish Commodities, both neutral entities deeply connected to the steel industry yet without direct commercial interests, we aim to be a platform for transformative ideas.

Each episode features Astrid Korf-Wolman, Willy Korf’s daughter, alongside Dr Mike Walsh, an independent consultant and project developer in the steel and special metals sector, and James Moss, strategy consultant and partner at First River Consulting.

Join us as we engage with thought-provoking industry leaders and innovators, appraising our current position and exploring pathways to hasten steel decarbonisation. Together, we strive to transform challenges into opportunities, fostering a community committed to the sustainable evolution of the steel industry.

Since its establishment in 1928, NASS has been successfully working to promote the interests of steel service centres throughout the UK. NASS is the only trade association covering the whole of the UK steel stockholding industry. NASS members supply steel to UK manufacturing and are a vital link in the supply chain from producer to customer, handling some 8 million tonnes of steel a year, principally to the construction, automotive and engineering industries.

MESTEEL is a Middle East b2b steel portal, providing buyers and sellers with, an in-depth database, steel offers, inquiries, news, jobs, information, events.
